Our Purpose
Migrants and English Language Skills
In 2025, there are more than 50 million immigrants living in the United States. Children, families and adults from countries around the world have come to the U.S. to flee the dangers of their native countries and to start a better life. Most of these migrants speak Spanish, French or Arabic, and nearly 50% have limited English language proficiency when they arrive.

The journey to the United States border is often arduous and dangerous and, especially at the southwest border, frequently made on foot. Many who enter the country arrive with little or no money and very few basic resources.

Language is a fundamental skill for immigrants to successfully start a life in a new country. The ability to speak and read basic English is critical for immigrants to pursue legal protections, including asylum. It is also a necessary skill for obtaining core necessities such as food, shelter, and clothing, and for pursing gainful employment.
